Hello! I'm finally able to get a moment to post some pictures of places I've been recently. My awesome and especially favorite friend Elizabeth came to visit me for two weeks and we were able to tramp all around and see lots of things in that time! We both love to travel and we pack our days absolutely full so we can see as much as we can in them. Get ready for many a blog-posting. The above picture is a shot of the beautiful English countryside as we are driving north-west towards the Lake District. It rained while we were driving and stopped for the most part when we arrived at our first destination--Castlerigg Circle.
This place is similar to Stonehenge. It's about 2 hours, or a bit more, from York. There are 38 stones in a circle. Within the ring is a rectange of an additional 10 standing stones. It is thought that the ring was built around 3000 BC--the beginning of the later Neolithic Period for all of you history buffs--and is apparently one of the earliest stone circles in Britain. Nobody seems to know what its origins are, but there is speculation that the ring was used for ceremonial or religious purposes.
Anyway, here I am inside a little circle of stones and then below you can see Liz and I with some of the stones in the background. The weather was actually fairly nice considering that it had rained hard during our drive. We were able to eat our lunch here, though we didn't sit on the grass since it was too wet!
You can see the lovely mountains of Cumbria in the back drop and this is a taste for what the Lake District is like!
