Welcome to Rydal Mount--the lovely hillside home the Wordsworth's lived in from 1813 to 1850. It's a great spot, this, and the gardens were absolutely lovely. William Wordsworth died in this home on April 23, 1850. Can you believe all the sunshine in our pictures? Seriously, it's unusual and fabulous!
Here we are in front of the house so you can get a closer look at the place. It's much nicer than Dove Cottage and had a lot of space, light, and windows. Behind us on the right hand side of the house up at the top is the window to Wordsworth's study. It's got a great view of Rydal Water, Lake Windermere, and the surrounding mountains. I'm sure it was very inspiring to look out.
This is a view down into the gardens. Apparently Wordsworth did some of the work himself--designing and labor. We enjoyed our walk around it. The amazing flowering trees were our favorite.
Here is a lovely picture (taken by Liz) of St. Mary's church. It is located at the bottom of the hill leading up to Rydal Mount. Next to it and featured in the picture below is 'Dora's Field'. Wordsworth's oldest daughter, Dora, was very special to him. She had battled tuberculosis almost her entire life and managed quite well with it, acutally. She was able to get out and about and live almost normally. She died in her forties and Wordsworth was heartbroken over it. So, he purchased the hillside below Rydale Mount and planted hundreds of Daffodils there in honor of Dora.
Here is Liz heading into 'Dora's Field' now. Unfortunately we missed the daffodil blooming, but it is still a quiet, beautiful, and peaceful place to visit.
